Betting Rules

All Sports

11.1 Results
Results of sporting events will be as per the podium position or adjudication of the official governing body unless otherwise stated. Any subsequent change to that result will be irrelevant for betting purposes.

11.2 Drawn Events
In the case two or more participants achieve the exact same winning result and therefore achieve a winning draw, the odds applied shall be equal to the odds accepted divided by the number of participants drawing (e.g. accepted odds 2.70 and three drawing participants leads to the applied odds: 2.70/3 = 0.90)

11.3 Head to Head
In head-to-head betting the following rules apply unless stated otherwise: -If one or more contestants fail to start, all bets are considered void and stakes will be refunded (odds=1.00).

  • At least one contestant must finish the contest or the bet is considered void and stakes refunded (odds=1.00).
  • If all contestants are disqualified or otherwise excluded, the odds is set to 1.00.
  • If the contestants achieve the exact same result, the Drawn Events rule applies.

12. FOOTBALL/SOCCER

12.1 Match results
All football bets will be settled on 90 minutes play (injury and stoppage time allowed). Extra Time, Golden Goals and Penalty Shoot-Outs do not count unless stated otherwise.

12.2 Antepost bets
The team awarded the championship shall be the winner, regardless of how it wins it (e.g. play-offs, extra time, golden goal, flick of a coin, etc.). If a team fails to qualify, is withdrawn or disqualified, all bets will be losing bets. All bets are all in and there is no refund on non-starters unless stated otherwise.

12.3 Suspended, Abandoned or Postponed Matches
If a football match is suspended after it has started, and is not resumed within 48 hours, the result is deemed void (void - odds = 1).If the match is resumed in 48 hours, bets shall be settled on the full time result. If a match is postponed for any reason, bets will deemed void (void = odds = 1) unless played within 48 hours of the original kick-off.

12.4 Matches not played as listed
In the event of a change of venue not published or made known to us at the time fixtures are posted, bets will stand provided the venue is not switched to the opponents ground or the match is played in a foreign country and this is not stated on our website, in which case selections for that match will be void. If a team plays a different opponent to that displayed on our web site the match will be void.

12.5 Abandoned matches
If a match starts but is later abandoned or postponed and is not completed (i.e 90 minutes of play according to the match officials, plus any stoppage time) all bets will be void except for those on markets which have been unconditionally determined (e.g. fist goal scorer, time of first goal, half time result etc.). If the abandoned match is re-arranged within 48 hours all bets will stand.

12.6. Goal scorer markets:

(a) First and last goal scorer:

A price will be offered for “no goal scorer” in the match. Own goals do not count. For first/last goal scorer purposes, players taking no part in the match will be void. For last goal scorer bets, any player taking part in the match will be deemed a runner irrespective of whether they were on the pitch at the time the last goal is scored. Every effort is made to quote all players for a team, however, if the first/last goal is scored by a player not quoted on the original list that player will still count as the winner. Customers have the right to request a price for a player not quoted on the original list.

(b) Anytime Goal scorer
Any player taking part in the match will be deemed a runner. Own goals do not count. Multiple bets involving anytime scorers in the match are accepted.

(c) Goal scorer disputes
In the event of a dispute over who scored a goal, settlement will be based on the result given by the Press Association (PA) immediately following the end of the match. Subsequent enquiries will not be considered for settlement purposes. If the PA do not produce statistics for a match played outside the UK , the result will be taken from the consensus of the national newspapers of the relevant country as printed the following day.

12.7 General rules for cards
Settlement will be made with reference to all to cards shown during the regular 90 minutes play (including any added injury time or stoppage time but excluding any Overtime) Any card shown after the full-time whistle has been blown will be disregarded.

12.7. Related Contingencies in one match
Where we offer various betting opportunities from the same match (e.g. correct score, first player to score etc.) these cannot be combined in accumulative bets where the outcome is related (except where special fixed prices are available for score casts)

Where an accumulative bet of this type has been accepted in error, it will be settled equally dividing the stake unit where the related outcome clash:

EXAMPLE

A £10 double Manchester UTD to win in 90 minutes play and Manchester UTD to win 2-1 is settled as 2 separate singles X £5

12.8 Voided matches in multiple bets

Bets which initially included the minimum number of choices, but included voided or abandoned matches, will still be counted and will be settled for the rest of choices in the bet.

13. BASKETBALL

13.1 The result of a basketball game is established at the end of the game. Unless otherwise stated, extra time is included.

13.2 NBA: at least 43 minutes of the match must have been played for bets to be considered valid. If this is not the case, all bets are considered void and the odds is set to 1.00.

A match must start on the stipulated date (local time) for bets to stand. If a match is cancelled or postponed, all bets are considered void and the odds is set to 1.00.

Bets on point spreads are considered void and the odds is set to 1.00 if the teams adjusted scores result in a draw.

13.3 If a game is suspended or postponed and is not resumed and completed within 48 hours, all bets on that game are deemed void.

13.4 The Over-Under result is given by the total number of points scored by the two teams. Unless otherwise stated, extra time is included.

14.TENNIS

14.1 Ante Post
Predict the winner of the tournament. If non-runner, all bets are void.

14.2 Winner
A bet on a tennis match is valid if at least one point played. If a tennis match is not played because one of the players retires, all bets on the match will be void and the odds is set to 1.00. If a tennis player leave the game after the start, all bets are void and the odds set to 1.00.
If a match is suspended or postponed and is not resumed and completed within 48 hours, all bets will be void and the odds is set to 1.00.

14.3 Exact Score
To apply bets for correct score, the match must be played to the end. If one of the players withdraws before that time, all bets will be void and the odds is set to 1.00.

14.4 Total Games / Handicap Games
Win or Loss determined by the number of games of both players. Bets are void if the total number of sets being changed or not complete. The tie-break and the super tie-break is defined as one game

15. MOTOR SPORTS (F1, Motorcycle racing)

15.1 If a driver withdraws before the start of the official qualifying session, all bets on that driver are considered void and the odds is set to 1.00. If the driver starts the qualifying but fails to start in the actual race, all bets on that driver are considered lost.

If the race is red flagged and the original start voided, events taking place before a possible re-start are ignored. Drivers who fail to re-start are considered to have withdrawn from the competition. In all other events, bets are settled according to the official results.

15.2 The following rules are used for head-to-head and triple head betting:

  • If all drivers finish the race, the winner is the driver with the best official finishing position at the time of the price ceremony.
  • If one driver fails to finish the race but one (or both) of the others do, bets on the non-finisher(s) are considered lost and the winner is determined as above.
  • If all drivers in the bet are non-finishers, the driver who completed the most laps is considered winner.
  • 15.3 Head to Head

The following rules are used for head-to-head betting:

  • If all drivers finish the race, the winner is the driver with the best official finishing position at the time of the price ceremony.
  • If one driver fails to finish the race but the other do, bets on the non-finisher(s) are considered lost.
  • If both drivers in the bet are non-finishers, the driver who completed the most laps is considered winner.
  • If both drivers abandon the race after completing the same number of laps, head to head bets are deemed void and the odds is set to 1.00.
  • If a driver withdraws before the race starts or doesn't attend at the first start, are deemed void. The start of any race is defined by the signal to start the formation lap.

15.4 If a Grand Prix is suspended or postponed and is not resumed and completed within 72 hours, all bets are deemed void.

15.5 If a driver withdraws before the start of official trials, bets on the winner driver or 1,2,3 position are deemed void. If the driver withdraws after the official trials have started, bets on the winner driver are deemed lost. The start of any race is defined by the signal to start the formation lap.

15.6 Any driver who completed at least 90 per cent of the race distance will be classified, whether or not he was running when the winner took the chequered flag.

16. SKIING

16.1 If a ski race is suspended or postponed, bets remain valid provided that the race is completed on the same run within 7 days. If the race takes place on a different run, bets are deemed void.

16.2 Head to Head
In the event of neither skier finishing the race, the number of completed runs will determine the winner. If both skiers complete the same number of runs, bets will be void. If either skiers doesn't start at all, head to head bets will be void.

17. RUGBY

The result of a Rugby match is deemed to be established at the end of the prescribed time. If the match is abandoned before full time, all bets are considered void and the odds set to 1.00.

18. AMERICAN FOOTBALL

The result of an American Football match is deemed to be established at the end of the match, including any extra time. At least 55 minutes of the match must have been played for bets to be considered valid. If this is not the case, all bets are considered void and the odds is set to 1.00. All overtime score counts.

19. GOLF

19.1 Outright bets
All outright bets are settled on the player winning the trophy. Play-offs will determine the winner of a golf event if necessary. If the event is shortened, for instance due to adverse weather, bets will be settled on the official result regardless of the number of rounds played.

19.2 Bets will be void on any player failing to tee off in the first round. Any subsequent withdrawals will be deemed to be losers.

20. BOXING

Results will be decided by the judges official decision, which will include points, TKO, KO or disqualification.

21. CYCLING

Outright and Individual Stage betting. Results will be settled according to the official competition rules and results. In the event of a disqualification, the podium presentation will count as the ‘weigh-in’ for settling purposes.

22. CRICKET

Results will be settled according to the official competition rules and results.

23. POLITICS

The official election result is used for all bet types and rounded to one (1) decimal if necessary. In case two or more participants reach the exact same result as per above, the event is considered a tie regardless of the number of actual votes.

For any matters not covered by these rules and by the contents of the Internet site, BETSHOP.COM reserves the right to decide on an individual basis on the basis of equity.


24. ICE HOCKEY

All games must start on the scheduled date (local stadium time) for bets to have action. The exception is if we advertise an incorrect start time. If a match venue is changed, bets already placed will stand providing the home team is still designated as such. If the home and away team for a listed match are reversed, bets placed based on the original listing will be void. Games must run for a minimum of 55 minutes for action. If a game is suspended before 55 complete minutes are played, all bets on the outcome of the game are refunded unless otherwise stated, except for bets on any markets that have been unconditionally determined.

All bets will be settled according to the final score at the end of regulation time, excluding overtime and penalty shootout. This does not occur for live betting bets (see LIVE BETTING RULES)

25. SNOOKER

Match-up betting is based upon correctly selecting the player who officially wins the match. In the event of a match starting – with the break for the first frame - but not being completed for whatever reason, the player progressing to the next round (or being declared winner of the competition/championship) will be deemed the winner. In the event of a match not starting at all, all bets are refunded.

LIVE BETTING RULES

Soccer

General

All match markets are based on the result at the end of a scheduled 90 minutes play This includes any added injury or stoppage time but does not include extra time, time allocated for a penalty shoot-out or golden goal.

Some soccer matches may have different playing schedules. In that case the following will apply:

90 minutes scheduled play (3 x 30 minutes). Full-time bets are still considered valid. Half-time bets are considered void.

80 minutes scheduled play (2 x 40 minutes). All bets are still considered valid.

Should any match be played prior to the date or kick-off time denoted then bets will stand provided the wager is placed not later than the revised kick-off time.

All bets on a match abandoned before the completion of 90 minutes play will be void unless the match is rearranged and played on the same date (local time) or stated otherwise in the rules, except for bets on any markets that have been unconditionally determined.

If the home and away teams for a listed match are reversed, bets placed based on the original listing will be void. Bets will stand if the home team is still designated as such.

Winner

Bets can be made by selecting a Home Win, a Draw or an Away Win

1 - Home Win X - Draw 2 - Away Win

If the game does not take place as scheduled and is not played in the same date (local time) all bets are void. The exception is if we advertise an incorrect kick-off time.

If a match venue is changed then bets already placed will stand providing the home team is still designated as such. If the home and away team for a listed match are reversed then bets placed based on the original listing will be void.

Asian Handicap
All live Asian Handicap bets are settled according to the score for the remainder of the game after the bet was placed. Goals scored before the bet was placed are not included.

Over/Under Goals
Predict the total goals achieved in a match. In live betting, goals are considered regardless of whether they are scored before or after the bet is placed.

Next Goal
Predict which team will score the first (or next) goal or if there will be no goals in a match. Own goals count to the team credited with the goal.

Total Goals
Predict the total goals achieved in the match/first half

Over 2.5
The bet will be a winner if there are 3 goals or more in the match/first half.

Under 2.5
The bet will be a winner if there are no goals or less than 3 goals in the match/first half.

Double Chance
A Double Chance bet allows you to cover two of the three possible outcomes in a football match with one bet.

The following options are available:

1 or X - if the result is either a home win or a draw, bets on this option are winners. X or 2 - if the result is either a draw or an away win, bets on this option are winners. 1 or 2 - if the result is either a home win or an away win, bets on this option are winners.

Half Time/Full Time
Predict the result of a match at halftime and fulltime. Example: If you choose 1/X, you bet on the home team to lead in the first half and the match to end in draw. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs do not count.

Exact Score
Predict the score at the end of normal time. Own goals count. If an exact score occurs that is not an option in our offer, all bets are lost.

3-way handicap
In a 3-Way Handicap, the line is set so that there can also be a draw outcome, giving you 3 potential bets.

Handicap (-1) - You win if your team wins the match with a goal difference of two or more. Tie - You win if the team with (-1) Handicap wins the match with exactly one goal difference. Handicap (+1) - You win if your team draws or wins the match.

Number of Goals

Bet on the total number of goals scored by the two teams within the official 90 minutes of play. Own goals are counted for betting purposes.

Team Goals

Predicts the exact number of goals scored by each team.

Team A/B Goals

Predict the total goals achieved by a named team.

Over 0.5 - The bet will be a winner if the team scores 1 or more goals Under 0.5 - The bet will be a winner if the team doesn't score Over 1.5 - The bet will be a winner if the team scores 2 or more goals Under 1.5 - The bet will be a winner if the team scores 1 goal or less

Own goals are counted for betting purposes.

Goal Crazy

Bets are settled on the total number of goals scored in the match/first half. Example: If your pick is 2-3, you win if 2 or 3 goals are scored in the match/first half.

1st To Score

Which team will score the first goal in a match. Own goals count to the team credited with the goal.

If an Event is abandoned after a goal is scored then all bets on team to score first goal will stand. If an Event is abandoned without any goal being scored, then all team to score first goal bets will be void.

Last To Score

Which team will score the last goal in a match. Own goals count to the team credited with the goal.

If an Event is abandoned after a goal is scored then all bets on team to score last will be void.

If an Event is abandoned without any goal being scored, then all team to score last goal bets will be void.

Draw no bet

Predict the winner team. In the event of a draw all bets are void and stakes are refunded.

Both Teams to Score

Yes = both teams to score. No = either team not to score.

Bets stand if both teams have scored in the match irrespective of if the match is later abandoned.

Team A/B Clean Sheet

Teams clean sheet means betting on a team to prevent the other team from scoring a goal. Yes or No in the match.

Teams Clean Sheet Home Team Yes – If the Away team does not score a goal, the bet is a winner. Teams Clean Sheet Home Team No – If the Away team does score a goal, the bet is a winner. Teams Clean Sheet Away Team Yes – If the Home team does not score a goal, the bet is a winner. Teams Clean Sheet Away Team No – If the Home team does score a goal, the bet is a winner.

Own goals count to the team credited with the goal.

Team A/B to score in both halves

Yes, No

Teams to score in 1st half/2nd half/both halves means betting on team to score at least one goal in 1st half/2nd half/both halves together.

If an Event is abandoned during the 1st half without any goal being scored, all wagers on teams to score in 1st half/2nd half/both halves will be void.

If an Event is abandoned during the 2nd half without any goal being scored in the 2nd half, all wagers on teams to score in 2nd half/both halves will be void.

If an Event is abandoned during the 1st half when both teams have scored a goal, then all wagers on teams to score in 1st half will be valid and all wagers on teams to score in 2nd half/both halves will be void.

If an Event is abandoned during the 2nd half when both teams have scored a goal in the 2nd half, all wagers on Teams to score in 2nd half/both halves will be valid.

If an Event is abandoned during the 1st half when one of the teams has scored a goal and the other team hasn't scored a goal, all wagers on teams to score in 1st half will be valid on the team who scored the goal and will be void on the team who didn’t score a goal. All wagers on teams to score in the 2nd half/both halves will be void.

If an Event is abandoned during the 2nd half when one of the teams has scored a goal in the 2nd half and the other team hasn't scored a goal in the 2nd half, all wagers on teams to score in 2nd half/both halves will be valid on the team who scored the goal and will be void on the team who didn’t score a goal.

Own goals count to the team credited with the goal.

Odd/Even

Odd/Even / Odd Even first half / Odd/Even second half

A prediction of whether the total number of accumulated goals in a match/first half/second half will add up to an odd or even number. Any match/first half/second half resulting in 0-0 will be settled as an even number of goals. In the event of an abandoned match/first half/second half, then bets for that match/half will be void.

Team A/B Odd/Even

Teams Odd/Even Full time/ 1st Half/2nd Half score

A prediction of whether the teams' number of accumulated goals in the match/1st half/2nd half will add up to an odd or even number. Any match resulting in 0-0 will be settled as an even number of goals. In the event of an abandoned match then bets for that match will be void.

1st Half: Winner

Bets settled on the first half result only. Bets will be void if the match is abandoned before half time. If a match is abandoned during the second half, all first half bets are still valid.

1 - Home Win First Half X - Draw in the First Half 2 - Away Win First Half

1st Half: Asian Handicap 2-way

The Asian Line is a special type of handicap used for soccer matches. Depending on the strength of each team, a handicap is issued for the game. This enables the odds for each side to be more similar, allowing for more competitive betting opportunities. All bets on the Asian Handicap in live betting (including 1st/2nd half bets) are settled according to the score line. Any goals prior to the bet being placed are ignored for settlement purposes.

1st Half: Over/Under Goals 2-way

Predict the total goals achieved in 1st half.

In live betting, goals are considered regardless of whether they are scored before or after the bet is placed.

A prediction of whether the total number of accumulated goals in the first/second half will add up to an odd or even number. Any first half resulting in 0-0 will be settled as an even number of goals. In the event of an abandoned first half, bets for that half will be void.

1st Half: Team A/B Odd/Even

A prediction of whether the teams' number of accumulated goals in the first half will add up to an odd or even number. Any first half resulting in 0-0 will be settled on as even number of goals. In the event of an abandoned first half, bets for that half will be void.

2nd Half Winner

Bets settled on the second half result only.

Bets can be made by selecting a Home Win, a Draw or an Away Win:

1 - Home Win X - Draw 2 - Away Win 2nd Half: Team A/B to score

Teams to score in 2nd Half means betting on team to score at least one goal in 2nd half.

If an event is abandoned during the 1st half without any goal being scored, all wagers on teams to score in 2nd half will be void.

If an event is abandoned during the 2nd half without any goal being scored in the 2nd half, all wagers on teams to score in 2nd half will be void.

If an event is abandoned during the 1st half when both teams have scored a goal, all wagers on teams to score in 2nd half will be void.

If an event is abandoned during the 2nd half when both teams have scored a goal in the 2nd half, all wagers on teams to score in 2nd half will be valid.

If an event is abandoned during the 1st half when one of the teams has scored a goal and the other team hasn't scored a goal, all wagers on teams to score in the 2nd half will be void.

If an event is abandoned during the 2nd half when one of the teams has scored a goal in the 2nd half and the other team hasn't scored a goal in the 2nd half, all wagers on teams to score in 2nd half will be valid on the team who scored the goal and will be void on the team who didn’t score a goal.

Own goals count to the team credited with the goal.

2nd Half: Odd/Even

A prediction of whether the total number of accumulated goals in second half will add up to an odd or even number. Any second half resulting in 0-0 will be settled as an even number of goals. In the event of an abandoned second half, bets for that half will be void.

2nd Half: Team A/B Odd/Even

A prediction of whether the teams' number of accumulated goals in the 2nd half will add up to an odd or even number. Any second half resulting in 0-0 will be settled as an even number of goals. In the event of an abandoned second half, bets for that half will be void.

Corners Total corners is similar to Handicap and Over/Under wager. Win/loss is determined by the number of corners by both teams, then comparing with the handicap given before the game start. 90 minutes must be finished fully in order for bets to be valid.

Corners: 1st Half Total corners 1st half is similar to Handicap and Over/Under wager. Win/loss is determined by the number of corners by both teams in the first half. Bets settled on the first half result only. Bets will be void if the match is abandoned before half time. If a match is abandoned during the second half, all first half bets are still valid.

Corners: 2nd Half Total corners 2nd half is similar to Handicap and Over/Under wager. Win/loss is determined by the number of corners by both teams in the second half. Bets settled on the second half result only. Bets will be void if the match is abandoned before the end of regular time.

Extra Time in Live Betting Bets on extra time in live betting are settled on the official statistics for the extra time period. Any goals or corners that were taken or scored during regulation time do not count. Extra time does not include penalty shoot outs.

Penalty Shootout in Live Betting In handicap betting, the result includes all penalties taken in the shootout, including sudden death. In over/under betting the result only includes the regulation ten penalties in the shootout and does not include sudden death. If match does not go to penalty shootout, all bets will be void.

Extra Time in Live-Betting

Extra time in live betting is settled on the official statistics for the extra time period. Any goals or corners that were taken or scored during regulation time do not count.

Extra time does not include penalty shoot outs.

Penalty shootout in Live-Betting

In handicap betting the result includes all penalties taken in the shoot-out, including sudden death. In over/under betting the result only includes the regulation ten penalties in the shoot-out and does not include sudden death.

If match does not go to penalty shootout all bets will be void.

1st Half

Bets settled on the first half result only.

Bets will be void if the match is abandoned before half time.

If a match is abandoned during the second half then all first half bets are still valid.

2nd Half

Bets settled on the second half result only.

Up To 70th Min (69:59)

Bet on the score at the end of the 70th minute.

If a match is abandoned before the 70th minute all Bets will be void.

If a match is abandoned after the 70th minute all Bets stands.

Up To 30th Min (29:59)

Bet on the score at the end of the 30th minute.

If a match is abandoned before the 30th minute all Bets will be void.

If a match is abandoned after the 30th minute all Bets stand.

1X2

Bets can be made by either selecting a Home Win, a Draw or an Away Win 1 = Home Win X =Draw 2 = Away win


1X2 Rest of Match

All bets will be considered from the current result.

1 - Home wins from the current result.

X - Draw from the current result.

2 - Away wins from the current result.

Example:

Current result is 1-0 and final result is 1-1:

The result for the settlement will be: 0-1.

1 - Bets on home team will be lost.

X - Bets on draw will be lost.

2 - Bets on away team will be winners.

if a match is abandoned, all bets will be void.

Bets settled on the first half result only.

Bets will be void if the match is abandoned before half time.

Any match resulting in 0-0 will be settled as an even number of goals.

Exact Score

Predict the score at the end of the game (including Overtime and Penalty shootout if played)

If an exact score occurs that is not an option in our offer, all bets are lost.

Double Chance

A Double Chance bet allows you to cover two of the three possible outcomes in a match with one bet.

The following options are available:

1 or X - if the result is either a home win or a draw, bets on this option are winners.

X or 2 - if the result is either a draw or away win, bets on this option are winners.

1 or 2 - if the result is either a home win or an away win, bets on this option are winners.

All bets are valid for regulation time in all leagues

Predict whether the game will go to overtime or not.


Baseball General

All games must start on the scheduled date (local time) for bets to have action. If a game does not start on the scheduled start date then all bets will be void. The exception is if we advertise an incorrect start time.

If a game is suspended and completed on a subsequent day then all bets will be considered void (unless otherwise stated in these rules).

All bets include extra innings unless otherwise stated.

There must be at least 5 full innings of play unless the home team is leading after 4½ innings, for bets on Money Line to have action. If a game is called or suspended, the winner is determined by the score after the last full inning unless the home team scores to tie, or takes the lead in the bottom half of the inning, in which case the winner is determined by the score at the time the game is called. Monies will be refunded if the home team ties the game and it is then suspended. Suspended games will not carry over to the following day.

The game must go at least 9 full innings (or 8½ innings if the home team is ahead) for bets on Over/Under or Run line to have action unless specified otherwise.

For 7 innings games the game must go at least 7 full innings (or 6½ innings if the home team is ahead) for bets on Over/Under or Run line to have action unless specified otherwise.

In 2-way markets push rules apply unless otherwise stated below. Stakes on single bets are returned, and in multiples/parlays the selection is treated as a non-runner.

If a match venue is changed then bets already placed will stand providing the home team is still designated as such. If the home and away team for a listed match are reversed then bets placed based on the original listing will be void.

Live-Betting

All bets are action regardless of pitching changes. Extra innings count.

If one or both of the starting pitchers are not exactly as specified at the time of the bet, the wager will be deemed "no action".

Special bets

Predict the winner of a special category in the race, such as 'King of the Mountains', 'Best sprinter', 'Best young player' etc., which are awarded with relevant coloured jersey (red, green, white, etc.)

Mercy Rule
If a sports organization uses the Mercy Rule, and such rule will be applied in a match, bets will stand and will be settled with the existing score at the time.
 
 
A mercy rule—also known by the terms slaughter rule, knockout rule and skunk rule—brings a sports event to an early end when one team has a very large and presumably insurmountable lead over the other team. It is called the mercy rule because it spares the losing team the humiliation of suffering a loss by an even larger number of points, and denies the winning team the satisfaction thereof, and prevents running up the score, a generally discouraged practice in which the opponent continues to score beyond the point when the game has become out of hand.
